Tsunami by Wilderness, no rudder As novices who had been in a variety of kayaks over the years, we visited Sunrise Mountain Sports in Livermore, CA thinking we knew what we wanted. The guys there were super helpful asking critical questions about our usage needs: where, how often, how long of paddles etc. What's really cool about Sunrise is they used to host demo days at Lake Del Valle where you could try out the kayaks - the one you thought you wanted and the one they recommend! (Sadly, they closed shop for a bit and reopened recently. We're not sure what their kayak selling process is now yet definitely they're worth a call @ 925.447-8330). After our trials, we landed on the watercraft they recommended, the Wilderness Tsunami. There are different models based on your size and again, usage needs. What we love about these kayaks is they are made for touring, maintaining speed and stability even in decent wind. Super straight tracking. If you expect you'll be kayaking in wind frequently, a rudder is a good idea. Yet we use the footrests to create momentum through peddling simulation (something we learned in a sea kayaking class) and if you have a rudder, real pedals steer the boat / rudder. So for now, no rudder. Comfortable seat, good storage, easy glide! We've noticed that this is what most rental places use as well, for sit inside kayaks.

Why 'sit inside' vs 'sit on top'? Sit on top is for the more casual kayaker who doesn't expect to be in wind nor kayaking for extended periods of time (> 90 mins on ave). Sit on tops are easier to get 'in' and you can get on and off from the water, unlike the sit-insides. Yet you're bound to get wet (fun in the summer!) and if you're in any level of wake, you'll take on water. There are drains so no worries there yet in the colder waters of Northern Cal, you're in for a much drier ride when you're in a sit inside kayak as we have. Spray skirts can be added for even more tumultuous action - think ocean vs. lake and optional on the bay depending on the waves and wind. And, the sit inside has a nice adjustable backrest to aid in long-distance kayaking as well as dry cargo storage.
